There is a lot you can do every day to reduce your food waste.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Irish households produce more than 250,000 tonnes of food waste per year at a cost of  €700 per household. Here are some ways to save good food from going into the bin.

Add ripe fruit to smootie

If you have fresh fruit and vegetables that are ripening, add them to your morning smoothie

Make a list

While you are meal planning, always make a list so you won’t buy more than you can use

Freeze, freeze, freeze

Don’t forget to mark the date you cooked it and froze it

Store your food correctly

When you store your food in the right way, it will give you more time to use it.

Make a veggie stock

Vegetable scrap, peels and leftover herb stems can make a great stock base

Save your potato peels

Potato peels can have a second chance if you use them to make delicious crisps.

Freshen up your home

Dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks make fragrant, biodegradable decor that really hold their scent.

Add some flavour to your water

You can use peel from citrus fruits, apples and cucumber to add some flavour to your glass of water

Don’t watch those herbs go to waste

If you don’t think you’ll use them before the go off, chop them off and put them into ice cube trays with some olive oil

Love and leftovers

If you have extra ingredients that you’re not sure what to do with, get creative and try something new instead of tossing them in the bin.
